How to Find Your Deepest Calling

Writer: David StamationDavid Stamation

I didn’t pay attention to this kind of thing until my late forties—so if you feel like you’ve missed the boat, trust me, it’s never too late. For years, I was restless and agitated without fully understanding why. Deep down, I wasn’t living in alignment with the man I knew myself to be. I was yearning for more.

Some call it a soul purpose, inner calling, higher mission, or destined path. The mistake I made? I thought I had to figure it out—and that it had to be big. That approach slowed me down for years. What I discovered was this: your deepest calling doesn’t need to be big. It just needs to be you.

I Douse the World with My Big Heart

That’s mine. It captures the essence of who I am—someone who gives fully, who loves deeply, who wants to make an impact through connection. But it wasn’t always this way. For years, I kept my heart armored, protected from the world. Naming my deepest calling changed that. It gave me permission to show up differently, to lean into who I truly am.

How Do You Find Yours?

Friends and clients often ask me this. At first, my answers were too complicated. But then I realized it wasn’t about figuring it out—it was about creating the right conditions for it to emerge.

Retreats: The Shortcut to Clarity

To discover my deepest calling, I had to step away from daily life—away from routines, responsibilities, and the constant noise that kept me stuck in my head. Nature was my catalyst.

It wasn’t an instant revelation. By the third or fourth day, something shifted. My mind quieted, my body relaxed, and the tension I had been carrying finally released. Only then—when I let go of the need to figure it out—did my true calling begin to surface.

But here’s the key: it doesn’t come fully formed. My first attempt sounded like corporate mumbo-jumbo. When I shared it, it landed with a thud. The men around me—who knew me, who saw my heart—pushed me to dig deeper. “We see how much you care. You give so much to others. That’s your truth.”

And then it hit me, like a thunderbolt: I Douse the World with My Big Heart.

I spoke it aloud, and this time, it resonated. I had found it.

Your Deepest Calling is Waiting

If you’re searching for your deepest calling, stop trying to figure it out. Instead, create space for it to find you. Step away. Slow down. Get quiet. Give yourself permission to explore.

Attending retreats is one of the most powerful ways to reconnect with yourself and uncover what’s been waiting beneath the surface. When you do, the answer will come—not as an intellectual idea, but as something you feel in your bones.

And when you find it? You’ll know.
