Welcome to the first in a series of fresh, engaging approaches to reflect on past goals and prepare for the year ahead. Let’s face it—some goals fail to ignite our enthusiasm. This method transforms the process, helping you set goals that energize and motivate.
Follow these strategies to make goal-setting a lighter, more rewarding experience, paving the way for meaningful progress.
Start by Looking Back
Reflect on the past year and honor yourself by recognizing what went well, no matter how small. Identify why those moments succeeded and look for patterns that made those goals engaging. This process is energizing—when we’re energized, motivation flows, progress accelerates, and enjoyment increases. Bring a trusted person into the mix to get things flowing—they usually can see your blind spots.
Looking Back Formula:
Reflect on what went well.
Honor yourself for achieving it.
Ask: What did I learn from this experience?
Identify which goals or activities were energizing.
Note which goals or activities were de-energizing.
You Deserve to Be Honored
Yes, you’re worth it. Recognizing and celebrating your accomplishments, big or small, is a powerful practice. In coaching, I emphasize honoring progress, and clients deeply value this step.
To fully honor yourself, go beyond intellectual acknowledgment—feel it emotionally and physically. Relive a specific moment in your mind’s eye and let it resonate in your body. Take your time; slow reflection deepens the experience and reinforces the value of your efforts.
Remember, honoring isn’t just about acknowledgment—it’s about truly feeling your success.
My Personal Approach
In late November, I begin by reflecting on and honoring my accomplishments. For about a week, I immerse myself in this practice, exploring multiple perspectives of self-recognition. This process creates a powerful energy for setting new goals.
Next, I conduct a year in review—assessing what worked, what didn’t, and the lessons learned—while celebrating successes (see the next blog on this process).
Finally, with the review complete, I allow ideas for the coming year to surface naturally, refining them into goals over 1-2 weeks. Stay tuned for more on setting meaningful goals!
My Steps:
1. Honor myself by reflecting on and celebrating accomplishments.
2. Conduct a detailed year in review, assessing successes, challenges, and lessons.
3. Draft a loose outline of goals for the year ahead, letting ideas surface and evolve over 1-2 weeks.
4. Refine and finalize a concise, set of goals or experiences for the coming year.
