Once you have made your base at The Lodge, be sure to linger a bit and explore winter and summer activities the area has to offer. Sandpoint is located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille – the 38th largest lake in the United States and fifth deepest at 1150 feet.

The lake is surrounded by national forests and a few small towns, with the largest population in Sandpoint. Most of the shoreline is unpopulated and only accessible by water craft. It is the home of America’s only inland naval base, built in World War II, where the Navy conducts acoustic underwater submarine research.


With an average snowfall of 300 inches and 434 inches in 2017-2018, you know Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a serious spot to hit the slopes, overlooking Lake Pend Oreille just 11 miles from Sandpoint. The mountain has a summit elevation of 6,400 feet with a vertical drop of 2,440 feet. For those that prefer ungroomed slopes, back-country skiing is the way to go for a memorable adventure.

There are 92 runs with a skiable area of 2,900 acres for all skill levels of skiers, snowboarders and cross-country enthusiasts. Locals love the mountain since it is seldom crowded. Two lodges, several restaurants, including the Sky House located on the summit, and shops make the ski village comfortable for the whole family.


Bonner County, where Sandpoint is located, is well known as a winter destination for snowmobilers. There are over 300 miles of snowmobile trials throughout the county covering picturesque mountains and valleys and link to a statewide trail network. Sandpoint is home to some of the best food in the Northwest with a wide variety of cuisine, local micro-breweries and wineries.

For a small town (pop. 7,500), Sandpoint has an unusual concentration of restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lighter fare and coffee houses abound. Be sure to visit award-winning coffee roaster, Evans Bros. for a morning wake up or afternoon lifter.

Arts and Culture

Sandpoint offers a variety of arts and culture events. Home to a vibrant art community, be sure to visit the galleries, theaters and live music venues. The biggest event is The Festival at Sandpoint held every August for 8-days of eclectic music held outside under the stars.

Visit Sandpoint’s vibrant downtown of well-known wood carvers, fine art, furniture makers and clothing boutiques. Grab your skis and visit Schweitzer Mountain Resort for an uncrowded day on the slopes.
